Ball Control Tennis
Introduction
Ball control is the secret of consistency in tennis. It is the ability of a player to keep the ball on the racket for a prolonged period of time during impact. It consists of accelerating the racket and accelerating it at a precise moment. Currently, Roger Federer has the best forehand ball control stroke in the world.
Ball Control Tennis Stroke
(1) Four parts of a ball control tennis stroke: 1. Swing; 2. Collision; 3 Contact; and 4. Follow through.
1. Swing: Increase the relative speed between the incoming ball and the racket to increase power,
2. Collision: Transfer momentum,
3. Contact: Suddenly increase force during impact to prolong the contact time in order to control the motion of the ball after the impact, and
Follow through: Is a natural consequence of the acceleration in a ball control stroke and can also compensate for miss timing in a stroke. Follow through tennis taught by USPTA uses follow through to compensate for miss timing of a hit.
Five Grades of Tennis Strokes
There are five grades of tennis strokes:
Grade 1 (Lowest): Hitting with speed during the moment of impact.
Grade 2: Hitting with acceleration during the moment of impact (good).
Grade 3: Hitting with jerk, the rate of increase of acceleration (professional).
Grade 4: Hitting with jumpulse at precise moment during impact (champion).
